Robert Downey Jr. Signed Funko Pop: How to Tell a Real One Before You Buy

Search for a signed Robert Downey Jr. Iron Man Funko Pop and nearly every listing says “authentic.” Some are. Others are a retail figure with the autograph printed on at the factory, and at least one Etsy seller says so right in the listing.

The two can sit side by side in the same search results. Here is how to sort them before any money moves.

The signature is usually on the box

Most signed Funko Pops carry the autograph on the packaging, not the vinyl. Pristine Auction’s listing for a signed Iron Man #529 describes it as hand signed on the packaging, with SWAU authentication behind it.

That has a side effect. The box is the item. A dented corner or a faded window changes what the piece is worth, and a seller’s photos should show every side of it.

    What a real one has

A named authenticator. Look for JSA, PSA/DNA, Beckett or SWAU in the listing. Then check that the certificate number actually exists. Our guide to PSA cert verification shows how.

A certificate the seller printed at home proves nothing. We wrote about why in certificate of authenticity for autographs.

Ink on the surface. A real signature in paint pen or marker sits on top of the packaging. Close-up photos should show the line catching light differently from the cardboard around it. Our paint pen vs Sharpie post covers what each one looks like on glossy surfaces.

A signature that is not a clone. Hand signing varies from item to item. If two listings show the exact same signature down to the loops, one picture was copied or the autograph was printed.

    Words that mean walk away

Walk away if the listing says

    Printed. Reprint. Preprinted. Reproduction. Facsimile.

Any of these means nobody signed that box.

Sellers blur the line on facsimile autographs often, and the word tends to hide in the last line of the description.

“Signed in person” is a claim, not proof. Ask for the certificate number and a close-up photo of the signature before you bid or buy.

    The downsides

eBay is a marketplace. It does not guarantee that any listing is genuine, and a fake can look as good as the real thing in a thumbnail.

Authentication also costs money, and the cost is built into the price. A signed Funko with no authenticator is cheaper for a reason, and you take on that risk yourself.
